The iconic Patek Philippe ‘Nautilus’ design and coloring are meant to evoke the portholes of transatlantic liners. Originally introduced in 1976, the Nautilus design is named for the submarine commanded by the fictional Captain Nemo in Jules Verne’s novels “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” and “the Mysterious Island”. What is slightly less widely known is that Nemo’s fantastic vessel was itself named after Robert Fulton’s real-life craft, which, upon completion of testing in 1800-1801, when Fulton and three mechanics descended to a depth of 25 feet, became the first ever practical submarine in existence.
