Up for sale is a Rolex SS Oyster Perpetual “Submariner” (Ref 5508) Automatic Men’s Wrist Watch, c. 1950s. Stainless Steel round Oyster case no. 448 932 measures 39 mm and features a black bi- directional bezel with white Arabic numerals. Black, gilt dial bears a beautiful patina and features luminescent Mercedes hands. Navy and gray canvas sport strap measures 268 mm . Automatic movement. Although the model 5508 Submariner was produced from about 1958-1963, this present one is comprised of a majority of Rolex factory 1970s-80s replacement components and is in excellent condition.
The internationally known Secret Service Agent James Bond donned this timepiece in a succession of his films, putting Rolex in the spotlight. Thus, the iconic timepiece has been nicknamed the “James Bond” watch.
